7.3 magnitude jolts W. Java, may lead to tsunami




An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Ritcher Scale jolted West Java at 2.55p.m. and has the potential to cause a tsunami.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that the epicenter of the quake was 142 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya, West Java. The quake originated 30 kilometers below the seabed. The quake could be felt in Jakarta and Yogyakarta for several minutes. Residents quickly rushed out to leave the buildings to avoid any possible collapses.

An aftershock measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale was felt in Tasikmalaya about 20 minutes after the quake. Its epicenter was 138 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya and 38 kilometers beneath the seabed.

There are no immediate reports on injuries or material losses due to the incident (jakarata post)
